A shop with a surprise out back

The Heirloom Room offers an eclectic collection of furniture, glassware, jewelry and art

A couple of buildings down from the corner of Cherokee and Missouri is an eclectic collection of furniture, glassware, clothing and art.

"I always say it's the journey not the destination because it's actually nothing like I envisioned," Angela Otto says.

She originally planned to open a more traditional boutique, but the location led her to think outside the box.

"When I got the shop a good friend of mine said oh my gosh you're moving on antique row you have to have antiques."

So there are old lamps, beautiful pieces of furniture and a table of tarnished brass, but The Heirloom Room is stocked with more than beautiful antiques.

"You need a minute because there's so much to look at."

You'll find plant hangers, vintage vases, handcrafted lip balms and body butters.

"We actually get stuff from all over the world doing fair trade," Otto points out.

There are paintings and jewelry from local artists.

"I was looking for different vendors to have in the store, different items and I didn't have to look very far. I looked right here in St. Louis and there's just so many."

They even make their own candles here.

"So it's just a hodge podge of everything."

Three rooms of stuff and a backdoor that leads to a lot of wows.

"It's a surprise no one knows it's back here."

It's a green house with windows that were upcycled from The Lemp Mansion and accessories with stories.

"Those are from a church," Otto says referring to a cool light fixture.

It's an incredible event space that can be set up for any kind of party.

So swing by The Heirloom Room, a gem of a place to shop or simply sit for a moment and just appreciate the beauty and history around you.
