St. Louis' biscuit-themed restaurant goes beyond biscuits and gravy

Red Oak Biscuits puts unexpected ingredients on a traditional Southern biscuit.

St. Louis, MO — A biscuit-centric restaurant in St. Louis is getting outstanding reviews from customers.

Red Oak Biscuits is located at 14th and Washington in downtown St. Louis. The owner says the menu is "flaring up Southern cuisine."

They're taking a traditional Southern biscuit and putting things on it you might not expect. If you order the crowd favorite "Pig in a Biscuit," you'll get a buttermilk biscuit, with smoked gouda, a scrambled egg, slow roasted pork, and bacon. Then there's a biscuit called "Smashing" with pesto, chili rosemary oil, avocado, arugula, and a sunny side up egg. And if you really want something different, try "The Atlantic." This biscuit has mango chutney, goat cheese, smoked salmon, and dill pickles. For dessert, order a sweet biscuit with chocolate gravy and raspberry compote.

Biscuits were a huge part of the owner's childhood, so after playing with the biscuit recipe for his restaurant, he says they landed on a winner.

Derek Schulze, owner said, "I think we ended up with what I consider the best biscuit in the United States and we'll stand by that and if you disagree, you can come here and we'll have a conversation."
