The crazy story behind Straight No Chaser's record deal

Putting their own spin on acapella

They are talented men who thanks to music met in college and unbeknownst to them, their fate was set in motion.

"To be honest we were kind of bored with the chorale music we were doing," Jerome Collins says.

So they decided to do something different and the response was overwhelming.

"We started off with a small crowd and then a bigger crowd and then all of a sudden we're selling out our auditorium," Collins goes on to say.

Straight No Chaser impressed audiences with their acapella talents.

"It's just our voices up there no effects, no filters, no nothing," explains Charlie Mechling.

But they graduated college and moved on with their lives. And then in 2006 as the guys prepared for their 10 year reunion someone in the group posted an old video.

"We just literally put that up for ourselves to see, to make fun of ourselves...look how young we were, look how much hair we had," Collins points out.

It went viral and the phone rang.

"The infamous call came from Atlantic records and we signed that dotted line and the rest has been history."

It has been a ridiculous journey for a group of guys who are now mostly married men and dads.

"This is a glorified college reunion. We're a rolling fraternity. Older, grayer, balder, but we're still doing it," Collins says.

"It's not something we ever could have ever planned or dreamed of, but it really is, we're the luckiest guys in music," adds Mechling.

Straight No Chaser will be at the Fabulous Fox Friday, November 24th. Tickets cost between $35 and $60.
