St. Louis nonprofits grateful for Give STL Day

More than 1,100 nonprofits will benefit from donations

ST. LOUIS — Give STL Day is in its eighth year.

Amelia Bond is the President and CEO of the St. Louis Community Foundation who puts on the day of giving.

"This year we have a record number of non-profits, 1,100 have signed up."

Non-profits are categorized on the website GiveSTLDay.org. Bond tells 5 On Your Side categories include, "Arts, health, education and a new category this year of black led and black benefiting nonprofits."

Last year was big, raising more than $4.5 million.

Bond is hoping this year might be bigger, she offers this advice to givers, "As I've said over the years, give to one you know or more, and give to one you don't know."

A nonprofit you might know is Circus Flora

"Circus Flora hasn't been able to perform since summer of 2019," said Karen Shoulders, the circus' managing director. "So obviously, like many of our performing arts companies in the area, that was devastating."

Hopefully, Give STL Day will be a catalyst to get the St. Louis-based circus company back on their feet or high in the sky on a trapeze.

"This is an opportunity for our community to show some love for us and what we do," Shoulders tells 5 On Your Side.

Circus Flora runs "Clowns On Call" working with Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital to send clowns for visits throughout the year. The circus company also partners with other non-profits to give away free tickets with their "Share the Circus" program.

Dragons Drum and Bugle Corps is a non-profit you may not know. Keith Porter is the Lieutenant Colonel for the Corps.

"If you have a passion for activities that bring people together, that bridge communities and showcase different cultures, then please support the Dragons Drum and Bugle Corp.," he said.

The Dragons is a free program for teens, providing them with instruments and professional instruction. In the summer, practices end with swimming and healthy snacks.

"That's what we're all about," Porter tells 5 On Your Side, "we're all about nurturing musical youth, all about multiculturalism, we're all about equity, diversity and inclusion."
