Which St. Louis area ZIP codes carry the most expensive insurance rates?

If you're looking to save some money, St. Charles County has some of the lowest rates in the region. But, if you're a resident of St. Louis city, the cost of coverage is much higher.

ST. LOUIS — It's the thing that fluctuates based on your performance and gives you either financial freedom or additional stress — auto insurance. Although it's a necessity to drive as an insured motorist, the cost to stay covered is sometimes easier said than done.

The Zebra recently released a comprehensive list of rates across the country, of which Missouri ranked as the 27th most expensive state in the nation for car insurance. In their report, The Zebra said Missouri's average annual car insurance premium is $1,334 — but that the St. Louis metropolitan area pays an additional $200 more, averaging out to $1,526 per-year.

Missouri's rates have spiked 33% since 2011, more than double of the 20% increase seen across the nation — a difference of over $3,000. Additionally, the St. Louis metropolitan region carries a 14% difference from the rest of Missouri, which amounts to around $190; nationwide, that's nearly a 7% difference, or about $100.

In the St. Louis region, six of the 10 least expensive ZIP codes among qualifying communities abide in St. Charles County:

  • 63303 | St. Charles
  • 63366 | O'Fallon
  • 63385 | Wentzville
  • 63367 | Lake St. Louis
  • 63304 | St. Charles
  • 63390 | Wright City
  • 63379 | Troy
  • 63301 | St. Charles
  • 63080 | Sullivan

The City of St. Louis carried nine of the 11 most expensive ZIP codes in the region among qualifying communities:

  • 63115 | St. Louis
  • 63120 | St. Louis
  • 63147 | St. Louis
  • 63106 | St. Louis
  • 63137 | Bellefontaine Neighbors
  • 63118 | St. Louis

The Zebra said drivers should shop around for insurance every 6 to 12 months to ensure the best rate of coverage.
