86-year-old man robbed in his garage in Belleville

The robbery occurred at the man's home on Gerold Lane off Foley Drive around 4:25 p.m.

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – Police are investigating after an 86-year-old man was robbed in his garage Friday afternoon.

The robbery occurred at the man’s home on Gerold Lane off Foley Drive around 4:25 p.m.

The man was approached by two men and one of them pointed a handgun at him while the other man forced him onto the garage floor and demanded his money. One of the suspects went through his pockets and took his belongings.

"It's heartbreaking to hear of something like that happen. It's like it happening to your dad or brother or uncle,” the man’s neighbor, Leeann Terry said.

Terry said the Gerold Lane community is like a tight-knit family, and they’re furious two suspects targeted their 86-year-old neighbor.

"It makes me very angry that somebody would go out and do that to an elderly person,” she said.

Police said the suspects may have fled the area in a black two-door car with loud exhaust. The victim declined medical treatment and was not injured.

"It's a real shame because if it was money that they needed, if they would have approached that gentleman and asked for money, he is so kind, he probably would have gave them any money that he had in his wallet,” Terry said.

We’re told the man was not hurt in the robbery, and he is in good spirits.

Anyone with information should contact the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department at 618-825-5204.
