ST. LOUIS COUNTY - Hazelwood Southeast Middle School was on lockdown Monday morning for several hours after an attempted carjacking in the school parking lot.

Around 10 a.m., officers from St. Louis County arrived on scene where a woman said an unknown armed man tried to steal her vehicle. The suspect was unsuccessful and ran eastbound from the school parking lot.

The lockdown was lifted just before 2 p.m.

Message from Principal Granger

Good Afternoon this is Dr. Chauncey Granger, principal at Hazelwood Southeast Middle School. Given parents’ right to know and as indicated in my earlier message, I want to provide you with an update and some alarming information of what occurred at outside our building earlier today.

This morning school administrators noticed an unknown male assailant with what appeared to be a handgun in the parking lot. Therefore, we immediately put the school on lockdown. The police were contacted and immediately responded. We were notified that an adult female was the victim of an attempted carjacking by gun point on our campus.

The building has been on lockdown for approximately two hours, as this is an active investigation. St. Louis County police and K-9 unit are still in the area.

All students were safe at all times as this occurred outside of our building. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my staff, SRO, and the St. Louis County Police for their diligence in handling this matter as quickly as possible.

To ensure the safety of students and staff, we will remain on level one lockdown for the remainder of the day. As an added security measure we will have an increased police presence in the area during dismissal.
