Two men charged in connection with a fatal shooting outside a funeral home in August had their charges dropped, lawyers representing the men said Wednesday.

Van Marcus Batts, 32 at the time, and Torrian Wallace, 26 at the time, were charged in August with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the shooting death of 39-year-old George Calmese Jr. that stemmed from an apparent custody dispute.

Lawyers for the men said charges were dropped after they presented four witnesses who said Calmese shot at the Wallace and Batts before they returned fire, killing Calmese and injuring his teenage son.
