Grandmother carjacked, grandson assaulted outside Sumner High School in North City

Police are still looking for three of the four teens involved in the incident.

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis police said Wednesday afternoon a 65-year-old grandmother and her 15-year-old grandson both became victims of crimes right after classes dismissed at Sumner High School on the city's north side.

The woman told police she drove up to pick up her grandson from school when four teenagers approached him and started hitting her grandson.

Within moments, the grandmother said one of the teens pointed a gun at her.

Police said when she jumped out of her car, the boy stole the woman's 2016 Ford Escape.

The three other teens ran off.

"I don't like to hear that at all," Farren Bass, a Sumner parent, said.

Bass' son is a freshman at the historic school on Cottage Avenue.

"I'm very disappointed to hear that and that actually scares me," Bass said.

Jue-Jue Calvin's son also attends the school.

"I've lived over here for about 25 years and you don't see that too much," Calvin said.

Police said the boys, who attacked the teen and carjacked his grandmother, range from 15 to 17 years old.

A spokesperson for St. Louis Public Schools confirms the young victim is a Sumner student.

It's not known if his attackers go to the school.

Meanwhile, parents are relieved the grandmother was not hurt and her grandson will be okay.

As for the teen criminals?

"I just pray for them and hope they get on a better path," Calvin said.

"Maybe if we come together as a community, things can change," Bass said.
