Fairview Heights man charged with friend's death

BELLEVILLE, Ill. - The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis charged a 20-year-old man for the death of a Belleville teenager on Friday afternoon.

Jewell Q. Smith from Fairview Heights, Illinois is charged with involuntary manslaughter. His bond is set at $100,000.

According to the MCS, there were seven people in the house on the 100 block of Paulette Drive where Cole Weirciszewsi was shot.

"Everyone involved in this event were all friends, the person charged, the victim and the witnesses," the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department wrote.

Deputies with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department said they began their investigation after the Belleville Memorial Hospital reported a man with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim, 19-year-old Cole Weirciszewski, died about 30 minutes later on Monday, Feb. 12.
