Man arrested, accused of shooting at police during pursuit in DuQuoin, Centralia

CENTRALIA, Ill. — An Illinois man is in custody after police said he shot at them during a chase through multiple Illinois counties.

Nathan C. Johnson, 41, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with the Tuesday incident.

A press release from the Illinois State Police said DuQuoin police spotted a car driving recklessly at around 1:20 Tuesday morning. When they tried to pull the vehicle over, Johnson fired at their car multiple times, according to the press release.

One of the officers fired back at Johnson, but they gave up the chase.

Centralia and Warmac police later spotted the car on U.S. Route 51 in rural Washington. Johnson fired shots at officers again before driving to his home and running into the woods.

After a short standoff, Johnson surrendered and was taken into custody.

No one was injured in the incident.
