Man charged in shooting of suspected car thief in St. Charles

ST. CHARLES CO., Mo. – A man who shot at a suspected car thief has been charged in the shooting.

On March 22, St. Charles police responded to a shooting in the 8000 block of South 6th Street where a 41-year-old man was found with gunshot wounds.

The shooter, Brandon Cauthen, 25, told police he shot the man who took off with his vehicle. Cauthen believed the suspect who took his vehicle was armed.

On Wednesday, the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney issued charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action against Cauthen.

His bond has been set at $100,000 cash-only.

Cauthen has prior arrests for resisting arrest, drug possession and conspiracy to commit assault.
