A man was taken into custody twice Tuesday, once for trying to break into a car then again after stealing the police car in which he was being held.

Police said the 25-year-old man was arrested after a woman saw him messing with her car on the 1200 block of Hampton Avenue jut before 4 a.m. Tuesday. Officers handcuffed him and put him in the back of a police car.

While police were investigating, the man got to the driver's seat of the car and drove off while still in handcuffs.

Police followed him until the car was stopped by spike strips in University City. No one was injured, and the man was taken into custody.
