Police: Man involved in Shop 'n Save standoff will not face charges

The store was evacuated during the dispute.'

ST. ANN, Mo. — The man who initiated a six-hour standoff with police outside of a St. Ann shopping center last week will not face charges, St. Ann police confirmed to 5 On Your Side.

Last Tuesday, police were called to the parking lot of the Shop 'n Save on the 9000 block of St. Charles Rock Road in north St. Louis County to investigate a report of a suspicious person located inside of a vehicle. Upon arrival, the man inside the reported car initiated a standoff with authorities. Police said he was acting suicidal.

St. Ann Police Chief Aaron Jiminez told 5 On Your Side the suspect, an Iraq War veteran, was having a tough time. He will not face charges. He added that during the standoff, two soldiers who served with the man arrived on scene to help talk him down.

The store was mostly evacuated during the dispute, but employees and some shoppers were stuck inside of the store while the standoff continued.

During the standoff, police identified "one or two" weapons located inside of his vehicle. Police did not say if he attempted to use the weapons towards responding law enforcement officers.

Lieutenant Dan Cowsert told 5 On Your Side the suspect surrendered shortly before 2:20 a.m. Wednesday because he was "just plain worn out" after the six-hour ordeal. He allegedly stepped out of his car and "hung his head low as if exhausted."

After surrendering, the man then spent time thanking the officers prior to leaving the scene in an ambulance alongside his two previously-mentioned friends. He was transported to an area hospital.
