ST. LOUIS - Mayor Krewson along with other city officials announced a gun buyback program for the region Friday afternoon.

In 2017, the City of St. Louis has recorded 197 murders, compared to 188 in 2016. There have also been 80 murders in St. Louis County.

“So far this year, the police department has taken over 2,000 guns off the streets – that’s not nearly enough. We are initiating a gun buy-back program for the city and county. The last time we had one was almost 10 years ago,” Krewson announced.

At least 1,000 people have been victims of non-fatal shootings, Krewson said.

The search for a new city police chief has been narrowed down to eight. The pool of candidates will be narrowed down to six by Dec. 14. Lawrence O’Toole has been working as the interim chief since April.
