A St. Louis teenager is facing charges for leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash that killed a 9-year-old boy.

On Friday, St. Louis County Police announced charges against 17-year-old Darian Cummings, of north St. Louis. He is charged with one count of second-degree murder, one count of tampering with a vehicle, and three counts of second-degree assault.

Police said Cummings carjacked a vehicle in April this year in the city of St. Louis. After the license plate on that vehicle was listed as stolen, a Normandy police officer spotted the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop it along I-70 near I-170.

Police say Cummings drove away, leading the Normandy officer on a high-speed chase weaving in and out of traffic. Police say Cummings exited onto Lambert International Boulevard, then ran a red light near the airport and crashed into a vehicle injuring the four people inside.

One of those victim’s, 9-year-old Caleb Lee, later died from his injuries.

Lee’s family shared their story with 5 On Your Side after learning about the recipients of his organ donation.

Cummings was a juvenile at the time of the crash. St. Louis County Police say he has now been certified to stand trial as an adult. Cummings is in custody on a $1,000,000 cash only bond.

One other juvenile suspect remains in the custody of St. Louis County Family Courts.
