Man charged after car sped off from police and hit an SUV, killing man and injuring a baby and two others

Police said an officer saw a convertible going through several stop signs and stop lights near West Florissant and Adelaide and tried to stop it, but it sped off.

ST. LOUIS – A man has been charged in a fatal accident that happened in north St. Louis Thursday afternoon.

Traveon Smith, 22, of St. Louis, was charged with one count of second-degree murder, one count of armed criminal action, one count of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of leaving the scene of an accident

St. Louis police and the fire department responded to Natural Bridge and Fair around noon. A man was pronounced dead at the scene, two other people and a baby were transported to a hospital in serious condition.

Police said an officer saw a convertible going through several stop signs and stop lights near West Florissant and Adelaide and tried to stop it, but it sped off. 

The convertible with two adults and the baby ran into an SUV. The impact to the SUV caused it to flip over several times and hit a wall of a nearby business.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. He's been identified as 68-year-old Joseph Powell.

Police said the driver of the convertible took off running, but they were able to find him and take him into custody a short time later.
