DIXON, Mo.– An 11-year-old from Dixon broke the state record for catching a river redhorse weighing 10 pounds, 3 ounces on Friday.

Maverick Yoakum used worms as bait when he caught the massive fish at Tavern Creek near St. Elizabeth, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation.

"I fought the fish for about two to three minutes before I got it to the bank," Yoakum said.

The 11-year-old might have even broken the world record. He's waiting for verification by the International Game Fish Association.

“I just can’t believe it! I have never thought about holding a record, and now I may be a world-record holder. I can’t believe it!” he said.

The previous state record river redhorse was 9 pounds, 13 ounces, also caught in Tavern Creek.
