An increase in bug activity and stricter regulations have helped Rottler Pest & Lawn Solutions see an uptick in commercial business in recent years, President and CEO Mike Rottler said.

The family-owned business, which has been in operation since 1956, had commercial revenue of about $7.8 million in 2017, an increase of more than 20 percent over 2016. The company’s annual commercial revenue has jumped from $3.6 million in 2012.

Mike Rottler said the strength of the industry is partly responsible for the company’s commercial growth, as bug activity has driven up the need for services at places like multifamily complexes, hotels and health care facilities.

There’s a need for pest services “wherever you have an influx of people,” Mike Rottler said.

What’s also helped the company, Mike Rottler said, is increased regulation focused on preventing foodborne diseases.

In 2011, President Barack Obama signed into the law the Food Safety Modernization Act, which tightened safety regulations for food facilities. The legislation mandated that food facilities implement a written preventive controls plan and established a risk-based mandated inspection frequency.
