Health experts in St. Louis County are warning families about a spike of an infectious disease.

A recent spike in cases of the bacterial infection Shigella among daycare and school age children have prompted officials to issue warnings:

  • Most who are infected develop diarrhea.
  • Other symptoms can include fever, and stomach cramps.
  • Shigella is easily transmitted from person to person.

Health experts say parents and teachers should make sure kids are washing their hands. Parents should make sure children with diarrhea do not attend school or daycare.

Schools and businesses are asked to excuse people from classes and work if they show symptoms.
