Florissant house fire leaves family homeless

"It doesn't matter who you are, what you are, or what you've done, it's devastating to lose everything."

FLORISSANT, Mo. – A family in Florissant is picking up the pieces after they lost their home in a fire. Now, family members are hoping a GoFundMe will help that family begin to rebuild.

Gretchen Kammerer is one neighbor who lives on the same block, she said she witnessed the entire incident.

“It was really scary actually. I went out in my backyard and just saw black smoke,” Kammerer said.

That’s when she ran to the front of her home to see where that smoke was coming from, and she noticed her neighbor’s house three doors down was engulfed in flames.

This happened around 11 a.m. on Thursday in the 1400 block of St. Jean. Fire officials said there were a few people in the home when the fire started but thankfully they escaped without getting hurt.

“I just saw fire and smoke and instantly went to where are the kids. The oldest who noticed the fire first was holding the baby. They were all so in shock I’m sure that to them not having socks or shoes on didn’t even register. They were watching their house burn and couldn’t do anything about it,” Kammerer said.

Fire officials labeled the house unsafe to live in and now the family of six is left to rebuild everything from scratch.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, what you are, or what you’ve done, it’s devastating to lose everything,” Kammerer said.
