The iconic Jewel Box in Forest Park celebrated a lifesize milestone with its 80th birthday Monday.

Dedicated in 1936, the display greenhouse opened to the public with praise for its Art Deco design and simple beauty by design.

Its original cost to build was $117,000 - about $200,000 in today's money - sustaining a powerful hailstorm in 1938 that knocked out thousands of pieces of glass.

The Jewel Box underwent a $3.5 million makeover in 2002 when it was converted into an open room event space used for weddings, parties, and other various special events.

It is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; and on Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission costs $1 per visitor, but is free to the public on Monday's and Tuesday's from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
