Grandmother thankful for family's safety after fire destroys Washington Park home

"This just a minor setback," said Letitia Williams. "That's how I look at it because I can replace this, but I can't replace myself and my kids."

WASHINGTON PARK, Ill. – Three generations of one family are bunking together after a fire destroyed their home this past weekend.

But, it’s their positivity and the generosity of others that is getting them through this tough time.

"The most damage was the kid's room and my room,” said Letitia Williams, who has lived in her home for three years.

“This just a minor setback,” Williams said. “That’s how I look at it because I can replace this, but I can’t replace myself and my kids.”

Williams’ 6-year-old grandson accidentally got a hold of a lighter and started the fire. But, everyone inside, including Williams’ two grandsons, her son and herself, got out safely.

“If you've got memories that are installed in your heart and in your mind, those pictures and stuff they don’t mean anything,” she said.

Williams said she has seen so much good come out of such a painful moment in her life.

“It's still a lot of love in this world and, I mean, that makes me cry, that makes me cry,” said Williams.

She is now looking for a new house. In the meantime, she and her grandsons are staying with her mother, who lives conveniently across the street.

But, there is a silver lining in this story.

During our interview with Williams, we heard the faint sound of purring coming from inside the home.

Two of Williams’ three cats died from smoke inhalation, but the third, named ‘Furball’ miraculously survived.

“We thought she was gone,” Williams said with a smile on her face.
