This week, the region will say goodbye to a fallen police officer killed in the line of duty.

Services for Officer Blake Snyder are set for Wednesday and Thursday.

Snyder was shot and killed while responding to a call last week.

Snyder will be buried in Godfrey, Illinois. There, people are preparing for his last ride home later this week. The funeral procession route is already lined with several blue and black ribbons, showing support for police.

Tuesday night, volunteers were adding more.

“It just shows respect and honor,” said Lana Bertschi, an old church friend of Snyder’s and one of the ribbon organizers. “It’s just kind of a silent way to show honor of a hero.”

The group started placing ribbons on telephone poles near Valhalla Memorial Park cemetery, and along the funeral procession route through Alton and Godfrey.

People are planning to line the road during the procession Thursday morning, to show support.

“It’s nice to see people come up and want to be a part of respecting his family and saying thank you and showing their love to someone,” Bertschi said.
