'I want them to feel welcomed': New center helps East St. Louis families

The center will provide a variety of services, including parenting classes, help with finding housing, counseling and much more.

EAST ST. LOUIS – It is a one-stop shop for families in the East St. Louis School District. It’s called the "Family and Community Engagement Center."

“I want them to feel not judged,” said Dr. Tiffany Gholson, the Director of Parent and Student Support Services. “I want them to feel welcomed."

The center will provide a variety of services, including parenting classes, help with finding housing, counseling and much more.

Mimie Cosey, who is raising her three great grandchildren, said she will utilize the center to find resources for the children.

Each one has special needs.

“They can steer me to the right person, to meet my children’s needs, whatever they are,” Cosey said. “I feel great that it is in my community and it helps strengthen our families.”

The center will also house a food pantry and an area stocked with school supplies and uniforms.
