ST. LOUIS – A man has been charged in connection to a downtown St. Louis murder.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office issued one count of first-degree murder and one count of armed criminal action against Danny Keys, 36, on Monday.

Officers responded to north 9th and Pine Friday morning where a man in his 50s was found shot. The incident occurred just blocks away from Citygarden.

The victim has been identified as 56-year-old James Moore, of Jennings.

Surveillance video showed Keys looking out to the street from inside the Mark Twain Hotel, police said. The video then showed him reaching toward his hip.

Witnesses told police a struggle took place and Keys said, "that's what you get for fighting me."

According to a probable cause statement, Keys fired at least one additional gunshot after Moore was already on the ground.

A police officer in a nearby substation said he heard the gunfire and when he went to investigate what happened, he saw the suspect walking toward him holding a gun.

Police said Keys told detectives he had a prior fight with Moore and that he grabbed his gun before heading downstairs to the lobby on the day of the shooting.

Keys’ bond is set at $500,000 cash-only.
