Man pleads guilty in shooting death of 9-year-old Jamyla Bolden

De'Eris Brown was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jamyla Bolden. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

CLAYTON, Mo. – Friday was a very somber day for the family of Jamyla Bolden after they learned the man responsible for shooting their daughter would receive 22 years in prison.

Today 23-year-old De'Eris Brown plead guilty on multiple felony counts after admitting to shooting into a Ferguson home back in August of 2015.

The family said 9-year old Jamyla was sitting on the bed doing her homework when bullets came flying through the window, killing her and striking her mother.

Prosecuting attorney Bob McCulloch said Brown claimed he shot up the house because he thought someone inside stole something from him.

Another act of violence that horrifically claimed the life of an innocent child.

“Stupidity is what it is, it's a guy who doesn’t understand like so many especially in that age group. They don't understand that you know guns kill people, you start firing a gun it's going to kill somebody,” McCulloch said.

On the day Jamyla was shot it changed James Bolden and his family's life forever.

“Seeing your child come in the hospital fully unclothed with a softball sized bullet wound that really was the bullet that took her life. I want to know why I want to know what cause the young man to do what he did,” Bolden said.

During the sentencing, Brown apologized to the family and said he regrets what he did. But Jamyla's father said that's not enough.

“Honestly it doesn't matter how much time they give him, it won’t bring my daughter back. Put yourself in my position, put yourself in her position. Twenty-two years, try an hour and thirty minutes, everybody wants their life right, think about an hour and thirty minutes fighting for your life,” Bolden said.

Now the only way he will remembered his daughter is through the memories they shared together.
