Man shot woman 8 times after raping her in St. Louis County

The victim, a 31-year-old woman, remains hospitalized.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY – A 36-year-old St. Louis man is in custody and facing several charges after he allegedly raped and shot a woman eight times.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued charges on Shawn Hughes for one count of first-degree rape or attempted rape, one count of first-degree assault, one count of armed criminal action, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm, and one count of tampering with physical evidence in felony prosecution.

According to a probable cause statement, Hughes pinned down the victim and sexually assaulted her. He then caused her serious physical injury by shooting her eight times and then fled the scene. Hughes admitted to continuing sexual intercourse with the victim after she told him she was hurt and to stop. He also told police he discarded the gun. Hughes is a convicted felon and possessed a firearm.

The incident was reported to police on March 21 around 4 a.m.

Hughes is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

Detectives from the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons are conducting the investigation.
