A Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper was taken to a hospital early Sunday morning following a rear-end crash involving his squad car.

Just before 3:30 a.m. the officer was conducting a traffic stop on northbound 170, just north of Scudder Road. Both the trooper and the person pulled over were inside their vehicles. That's when a suspected drunk driver plowed into the rear of the squad car, police say.

The trooper had his flashing lights on when he was hit.

The driver that caused the accident was arrested on suspicion of DUI. The officer was taken to a hospital to be checked out. No serious injuries were reported.

Every case is different... But in the last 86 years, 31 MSHP troopers have been killed in the line of duty. Over half were killed in a crash, or struck down on the side of the highway.
