ST. LOUIS COUNTY – New technology is helping DNA analysts solve cold cases in St. Louis County.

St. Louis County Police DNA technical leader Kyra Groeblinghoff said part of her job is to stay current with the latest advancements in forensic science. She said the biggest advancement in the last few years is a DNA kit that helps better differentiate one person from another on crime scene evidence.

That kit is now being used in the St. Louis County Police Crime Lab.

She said the department will also use a federal grant next year to buy new software to analyze evidence that has traces of DNA on it by more than one person. The Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS, is also used on a daily basis by forensic scientists across the country.

DNA profiles from more and more crimes scenes and offenders are entered into the national database everyday.

Matches in the forensic profiles could lead to an arrest in a case that hasn’t been solved in years.
