ST. LOUIS COUNTY – An investigation is underway after a St. Louis Metropolitan police officer was involved in a shooting early Saturday morning.
Around 12:15 a.m., officers from St. Louis County were contacted by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department to assist their agency regarding an officer assault and officer-involved shooting.
Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled the scene. A short time later, the Metro Air Unit found the vehicle in the 3400 block of Pine Grove in the City of Uplands Park.
When officers arrived on scene, the suspect fled from the vehicle. When one officer confronted the suspect in a backyard, the suspect pulled out a handgun. In fear of his life and the life of his partner, the officer fired his department issued handgun at the suspect, according to a spokesperson for St. Louis County police.
23-year-old Leontaye Combs was struck and taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital and treated for his injuries. He was released back to the department’s custody and transported to Justice Services.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officer is a 30-year-old male with 6 years of service.
No police officers were injured during the incident.
The incident is under investigation by the St. Louis County Police Department Bureau of Crimes Against Persons.
Saturday afternoon, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued charges against the suspect, Leontaye Combs, for one count of first-degree assault, one count armed criminal action and one count of resisting arrest. He’s being held on a $150,000 cash-only bond.
Combs is a convicted felon.
