Jefferson County announced Rockford Beach Park will be closed immediately until a review is complete.
The closing comes after 14-year-old Devon Cotton drowned in the Big River. Cotton’s father, Carlos Cotton has been pushing for the area to close.
In a press release Jefferson County said, “The recent heavy rains caused historic flooding to Jefferson County Parks along the Big River Watershed. During this time, signs in several parks were washed away. The cleanup process to the parks continues and the reposting of signs is a portion of this process. Jefferson County cautions that all natural bodies of water are “swim at your own risk.”
Due to recent flooding of the Big River and potential of hydraulic changes within the river and dam, the county has requested the Corps of Engineers have someone review the dam for any changes and mitigate any potential dangers caused by severe flooding.
In 2016, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had repairs made to the dam near Rockford Beach Park to keep it from collapsing.
Jefferson County sends their condolences to the family of 14-year-old Devon Cotton.
