ST. LOUIS — The city is studying a possible route and plan that would expand MetroLink services to underserved areas. That proposed route would go from north St. Louis to south St. Louis County.

Bill Rays, a resident in University City, relies on Metro link and he said he’s counting on the expansion.

“A lot of times instead of driving I will just park at a stop and you know take the MetroLink. I use it about two or three times a week,” Ray said.

Although Ray is looking forward to the expansion, he’s also concerned about safety while riding the MetroLink. He said he believes once the safety issue is addressed the expansion could have a positive impact throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area.

“Safety throughout the region is something that is extraordinarily important to folks being and feeling like they're comfortable. For us to find ourselves in that higher echelon of cities throughout this country we need a strong we need a vibrant Metro Link a vibrant public transportation system,” Ray said.

The City of St. Louis, St. Louis County, and St. Clair County leaders are already working to improve safety on MetroLink. Officials began their study of security changes after several shootings and robberies on MetroLink platforms last year.

Once both the City and County studies are done, the City Board of Aldermen will vote to approve the expansion. Then, the East-West Gateway Board of Directors and Metro Link would make a final decision.
