Union employees for Schnucks markets voted to approve a new three-year contract Wednesday night, avoiding a potential strike.
Union leaders of UFCW Local 655 recommended a new tentative contract proposal Friday evening, and encouraged union members to vote in favor of it at a Wednesday night's meeting.
During the meeting, some members chanted "tear it up" in reference to the contract, but leaders reiterated their support for contract. In the end, the contract was approved by a vote of 1020 to 507.
Local 655 President David Cook said significant changes were made that would "have a positive impact on our members."
"For 77 years, our company – and our team of 14,500 hard-working men and women – have given our customers a special shopping experience and has been a source of good jobs and careers," Todd Schnuck said in a union press release. "We intend to continue those traditions for the next 77 years…and beyond.”
A press release from Local 655 said this deal will serve as a standard for other employers of union members in the future. The release said Shop 'n Save and Dierbergs have already said they will sign the same economic package.
