ST. LOUIS — People in the St. Louis area donated nearly 2 million items in the annual Scouting for Food drive.

Boy Scouts fanned out across the area Saturday to collect blue bags filled canned goods and non-perishable items.

All of those blue bags added up to 1.9 million food items donated, according to the Boy Scouts of America Greater St. Louis Area Council.

“We are grateful for another generous Scouting For Food collection,” said Ronald Green, Scout Executive/CEO of the Greater St. Louis Area Council. “These efforts would not be possible without the entire community stepping up to help those in need. The generosity and commitment to our community are what make this region a great place to live and work.”

The food will stock hundreds of pantry shelves across the St. Louis metro area just ahead of the busy holiday season. The St. Louis Area Foodbank posted online that it accepted more than 614,000 pounds of food Saturday.

For those who didn’t get a blue bag or forgot to put it out, MERS Missouri Goodwill is still accepting non-perishable and canned food donations at all of its stores through Nov. 24.
