ST. LOUIS -- The pool of candidates for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department's next chief has been narrowed down to eight, according to the City of St. Louis.

The city says five of the candidates are from around the country while three are internal candidates. Of the eight candidates, half of them are non-white and one is a woman.

The pool of candidates will be narrowed down to six by Dec. 14, and the final six will attend a town hall meeting that night at the St. Louis University School of Law.

Lawrence O'Toole has been working as the interim chief since April when Mayor Lyda Krewson took office and former chief Sam Dotson retired. O'Toole has said he's interested in staying in the position permanently.

During her campaign, Krewson said improving public safety was one of her primary goals. She said the qualities she's looking for in the next chief are someone with an excellent reputation, excellent police skills, a good people person, and someone who can lead the department in a fair, inclusive manner.
