Shoppers fight crowds-- and the Black Friday stigma

While some might argue Black Friday has become too much, even overshadowing Thanksgiving, others say it’s become a special holiday of its own.

“You get back to just knowing people without all the technology in front of you,” said Frank Partel. “And that’s what I think needs to be done a lot more often.”

Partel and his neighbors began heading out to the Cabela’s St. Louis Outlet location a few years ago. This time around, they scored the first spot in line by arriving Wednesday evening. The doors did not even open until 5 a.m. Friday.

“Sometimes you get really good deals and that’s what we go for,” he said.

Despite the big crowds, he also says this is like an escape of its own—an urban camping trip.

“Get away from all the daily grind, as you would call it,” he said.

Also among the 760 people who waited outside to be the first few to get into the store is Bret Martin. He and his friends made the trip from Silex, Missouri.

“Anything to save a buck,” he said. “Anything to kill a buck really, because it’s Cabela’s.”
