An SIU student was killed in a fire early Wednesday morning.

Carbondale Police said the fire happened at 4:50 Wednesday morning on the 700 block of West Freeman Street. Members of the police and fire departments responded to the scene, where the home was heavily engulfed in flames.

After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the person dead inside. The only information provided about the victim was that the victim was an SIU student.

Police said the investigation into the fire is ongoing, and an autopsy is pending, but they do not suspect foul play at this point.

The SIU Office of Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, the SIU Department of Public Safety and Illinois State Police are assisting in the investigation.
