Snow, sleet begins to fall in St. Louis area

Climatologically, there's only a 3% of snow in St. Louis on Easter. The most snow ever recorded on Easter was 1" in 1917. There's a chance that record could be broken Sunday.

ST. LOUIS — ST. LOUIS - Sunday may be April Fools' Day, but the snow in the forecast for Easter is no joke.

Climatologically, there's only a 3% of snow in St. Louis on Easter. The most snow ever recorded on Easter was 1" in 1917. There's a chance that record could be broken Sunday.

Today started out cold but dry, with temperatures in the mid-30s. Precipitation started to move in from the west and northwest after 1-2 p.m., and spread east through the day.

As of 4 p.m., we received reports of snow in O'Fallon, sleet in south St. Louis and Pacific and rain down in Farmington.

West and northwest of St. Louis, snow showers will fill in, and snow could be heavy at times. Farther south along I-44, wet snow and sleet will mix with rain, limiting accumulation for that area.

The heaviest snow will likely fall along and north of I-70 between 4-9 p.m. There could be a sharp gradient between multiple inches of snow to a light, slushy coating. A heavy snow band could set up north of St. Louis, bringing 2-4" of snow.

For the St. Louis metro, generally 1-2" is possible, but there is the potential for locally higher amounts in the metro and for points north.

Farther south, trace amounts to an inch are reasonable, but rain could limit any snow accumulation along a line from Ft. Leonard Wood to around Mt. Vernon, IL.

Snow could make roads slick and slushy despite the warm ground temperatures. Those traveling in the afternoon for the Easter holiday should prepare for a longer commute and poor road conditions.

Much of the precipitation will exit to the southeast after sunset and the entire bi-state clear by midnight.

Showers are possible Monday, but temperatures will rise into the upper 40s where wintry precipitation won't be a threat.
