St. Louis County woman battles sewage flood in basement

"My basement keeps flooding every time they are doing work outside," said Yolanda Jackson, who owns a duplex in Jennings.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY – A St. Louis County woman whose basement was flooded with raw sewage said she got the runaround from the sewer department and Missouri American Water.

"My basement keeps flooding every time they are doing work outside," said Yolanda Jackson, who owns a duplex in Jennings.

Walking into the basement of Yolanda Jackson's duplex, you can smell the sewage before you see it.

"The basement is flooded on both sides of the duplex," she said. "Toilet paper, fecal matter.”

But it is a slow process getting rid it. Meanwhile, across the street from Jackson's home, crews from Missouri-American Water Company work on a water main.

A company representative confirmed the water main broke Monday. When it did, Jackson said water spewed three feet into the air.

"The very next day my basement's flooded," she said.

The worst part, Jackson said, is that it happened the same way about a year ago. First the water main broke, then her basement flooded.

"When I called MSD, everybody kept passing the buck," she said.

Jackson said she doesn't know how she will pay on her own or make the problem go away.

5 On Your Side spoke with representatives from MSD and Missouri American Water. Both said they are not responsible.

There may be good news for Jackson, though. Since she lives in St. Louis County, a residential sewer repair program may kick in to defer some of the costs.

5 On Your Side will keep on top of the matter until it is resolved.
