Longtime St. Louis sports influence Bill Wilkerson passed away at the age of 72, KMOX reported Friday.

Wilkerson, a broadcaster who spent 40 years with KMOX and KTRS radio, helped provide play-by-play commentary for both the baseball and football St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis Blues and Missouri Tigers football.

Wilkerson worked alongside the likes of Bob Costas, Jack Buck, Mike Shannon and others during his four-decade tenure on-air and behind the scenes, including his stint as a weekly co-anchor for KMOX's morning show.

Wilkerson was awarded several honors, including the FBI's Director's Community Leadership Award in 2009. He also served as a board member of the Mathews-Dickey Boys' and Girls' Club for 40 years.

He was survived by his wife, Margie, their three children and 12 grandchildren.
