The city of Wellston is failing its citizens and taxpayers.

That's according to a new state audit which says poor management and bad decisions plague the the city.

"The city's financial condition has drastically declined, and a series of missteps, miscalculations and inappropriate activities continue to lead the city down a path of further financial ruin," Auditor Nicole Galloway said in a press release.

Auditor Nicole Galloway announced the results of the citizen-requested audit. She gave Wellston a poor rating, meaning she will perform a follow-up review later this year.

The audit found the city doesn't prepare budgets, misused funding, and illegally charged municipal court fees. The city was also ordered to pay almost $80,000 in settlement costs, the press release said.
