Woman hit and killed in deadly north St. Louis intersection, area churches step in to help

People who saw the crash say there are too many drug deals and violence in this area and they want it to stop. There were 50 criminal police reports filed within a block of this intersection last year alone.

ST. LOUIS – People who witnessed a woman get struck and killed at a north St. Louis intersection are sharing their frustrations with 5 On Your Side.

They say crashes and crime plague the intersection of Grand and Montgomery. Police say Tamika Davis was trying to cross the street Tuesday night when she was hit by a car. The driver did stop and is not facing any charges.

However, people who saw the crash say there are too many drug deals and violence in this area and they want it to stop. There were 50 criminal police reports filed within a block of this intersection, last year alone. The reports range from assaults and armed robberies to six hit and runs.

James Clark of Better Family Life would like a drug treatment facility to be built near Grand and Montgomery to make the busy intersection safer. Clark says this area has been a neglected part of St. Louis for far too long.

“It is a high traffic area, it's an open-air drug market where drugs are bought and sold and used, 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Clark said.

Bishop Elijah Hankerson, President of the St. Louis Metropolitan Clergy Coalition, is teaming up with Better Family Life.

On Sunday, March 25, local pastors will announce plans to provide food, clothing and toiletries regularly to open air drug markets, like the area in and around the intersection of Grand and Montgomery.
