CREVE COEUR, Mo. — A person is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds in the United States according the National Sexual Assault hotline.

It's a startling statistic and one that has a group of local women ready to fight back.

They are taking part in the 12-hour Rape Aggression Defense course or RAD at the Creve Coeur Government Center’s multipurpose room on New Ballas Road.

The course is three hours per night over the course of four nights. It’s a comprehensive course for woman that teaches awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance.

It’s taught by certified instructors and is sponsored by the Creve Coeur Joint Crime Prevention Partnership. Women say the hands-on defense training makes them feel empowered and safe.

Participants take part in simulated assault scenarios with Rad instructors who wear state-of-the-art protective gear specifically designed for training.

You can email your name, address and phone number to crimeprevention@crevecoeurmo.gov if you are interested in the course.
