One of Nintendo's most popular franchises is finally coming to its newest game system.

In an announcement late Thursday afternoon, Nintendo said its hit Super Smash Bros. franchise will be coming to its Switch portable game console later this year.

The announcement was made through one of the company's online "Nintendo Direct" virtual press conferences. Beyond the above teaser video, however, not much is known about the new game, including details on which characters will be involved or even the full title of the forthcoming game.

The prospect of a new version of Super Smash Bros. for the Switch was enough to send fans on Twitter into overdrive, with the game quickly rising to the number two trending topic spot in the United States.

One Nintendo fan captured the scene at the New York Nintendo store, where fans clearly were excited.

Nintendo Thursday also revealed a number of new games coming to the Switch and 3DS consoles this year.

Among the highlights: a new Mario Tennis Aces game coming to the Switch on June 22, the Crash Bandicoot trilogy arriving on the Switch on July 10 and a remake of 2001's Luigi's Mansion for the Nintendo 3DS arriving later this year.
