Sterling K. Brown had a wardrobe malfunction at the SAG Awards on Sunday night, tearing his tuxedo jacket noticeably at the shoulder.
That's the slight bit of bad news.
On the major bright side, the rip came as Brown was wildly celebrating two big SAG Award wins.
This Is Us won the drama ensemble award and Brown won for outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama — the first time a black male has won the award.
Brown told USA TODAY that he ripped his jacket during the hugging with This Is Us cast members during the crazed ensemble-win celebration.
"That was total joy," Brown said of the ripped jacket, on which you could see black tape holding it together. "When they called This is Us I jumped out my seat. And I kept jumping. I couldn’t stop. I bear-hugged everybody in my cast. And at some point in time, my jacket ripped."
"There have to be casualties of war," Brown said with a smile. "And now there are casualties of joy. My jacket is one of them.”
A set producer sitting with the group happened to be carrying black tape, which made the on-the-spot repair possible.
Backstage, a smiling Brown walked backward to the podium, explaining, "I'm backing up because they ripped my jacket."
He also explained that he was hoarse from screaming and he was recovering from a cold.
The This Is Us ensemble win, said Brown, was a total shock. The cast collectively thought the best-ensemble award would go to the heavily favored The Handmaid's Tale.
"We were waiting for them to say Handmaid's Tale. Handmaid's Tale is dope. But then they called our network television drama," said Brown. "The fact we get a chance to come (to the SAG Awards), and we won. This is a very special night."
