RENO — The main route into Burning Man is closed because of a wildfire.

The Nevada Department of Transportation reported Wednesday afternoon that Nevada 447 is closed in both directions between Empire and Nixon.

The fire was 30,000 acres with 0 percent containment on Wednesday night, according to InciWeb. It started Tuesday northwest of Pyramid Lake in the mountains west of the highway.

The DOT’s road conditions website indicated the closure was estimated to last until 1 a.m. Thursday morning. Sierra Front's Twitter feed said the road was closed until further notice.

"'Burning Man' is a major safety concern on Nevada State Route 447; there is potential for the fire to progress toward the "Burning Man" event area," InciWeb wrote on its website, noting that high-voltage lines have been damaged and structures are threatened.

There is an alternate route to Burning Man from Reno, but it's a six-hour journey up U.S. 395 to Alturas, Calif., and then east into the Black Rock Desert.

There is no estimated re-opening of 447 at this point.
