A man is dead after he was shot by an off-duty police officer at a Cahokia Walmart on Camp Jackson Road.

The shooting happened around 5:15 p.m. Monday. The officer recognized a man who was wanted for several felony warrants, according to Cahokia Police. The off-duty officer works for the Washington Park Police Department.

Cahokia Police said in a news release that the Washington Park officer fired at the man's vehicle as it barreled toward him late Monday afternoon. The 35-year-old man from Centerville, Illinois, was shot but he drove for about a mile before striking a median. Officers arrested the suspect, who then had him transported via ambulance to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The off-duty officer was a customer at the store, and not working as security, according to Walmart spokesperson Leslee Wright.

Two Cahokia police officers were injured.

The Illinois State Police are conducting an independent investigation of the incident.
