Weaver has simply been 'lights out' this spring

The Cardinals' starting pitchers have now allowed just two earned runs, three total, in their last five games covering a combined 25 1/3 innings

Luke Weaver’s dominating spring continued on Saturday as he worked 4 1/3 scoreless innings in the Cardinals’ 3-0 win over the Braves in Orlando, Fla.

Weaver has allowed only one run in 13 1/3 innings in his four starts this spring, an ERA of 0.68. He also had six strikeouts, increased his total for the spring to 15. The first-inning single by Freddie Freeman was the only one for the Braves against six Cardinal pitchers.

Other news and notes from Saturday:

At the plate: Paul DeJong had a pair of hits, including an RBI double … Kolten Wong also had two hits and Randy Arozarena singled in a run and manufactured the first Cardinals run after coming in as a pinch-tunner in the fifth inning when he stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.

On the mound: The Cardinals’ starting pitchers have now allowed just two earned runs, three total, in their last five games covering a combined 25 1/3 innings … Weaver did walk three, elevating his pitch count and forcing him out of the game after 4 1/3 innings … Matt Bowman rook over for Weaver and stranded the inherited runner as he pitched around a walk to get out of the fifth … John Brebbia and Jason Motte each worked a scoreless inning with Brebbia recording two strikeouts … Former Cardinal Edward Mujica, in the minor league camp, was brought along on the trip and pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Up next: John Gant is scheduled to make his first start of the spring on Sunday as the Cardinals host the Nationals in Jupiter. Luke Gregerson, who has been sidelined because of a sore oblique, is scheduled to make his second appearance of the spring.
