Newly hired Florida State coach Willie Taggart and former Seminoles cornerback Deion Sanders are in the "early discussion phase" of the school legend potentially joining Taggart's staff as a defensive backs coach, according to a report by Noles 247 Sports.
Asked about the possibility of joining FSU's coaching staff during an interview at the Seminoles' Independence Bowl victory over Southern Mississippi on Wednesday, Sanders said, "You never know.
"I've been known to make big plays with these colors on," Sanders said. "That's all I'm going to say."
Also on Wednesday, Taggart posted a photo with Sanders, writing, "It was great catching up with the G.O.A.T." Sanders was seen chatting with FSU athletic director Stan Wilcox on the sidelines as well.
Sanders, who was a two-time All-American at FSU in the late 1980s and also played baseball and ran track, also ignited the possibility of coaching at FSU over the weekend when he responded, "Maybe," to a fan asking about the likelihood of him joining FSU's staff in a Twitter exchange.
Sanders, known as "Primetime" and "Neon Deion" in his football-playing heyday, most recently coached as an offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian High School in Cedar Hill, Texas — where his sons attend. He's also been working as an analyst for NFL Network and CBS.
The 50-year-old Sanders was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame in 2011. After his stellar collegiate career as a three-way athlete, Sanders went on to enjoy 14 seasons in the NFL in which he was an eight-time Pro Bowler. He maintained a nine-year pro baseball career on the side.
